Lube guide: water vs silicone vs hybrid, in plain English
I spent years buying the wrong lube for my toys and not understanding why things felt off. The fix is one paragraph; here’s the whole story.
Lube is the most undersold thing in this entire space, and I say that as someone who happily spent $200 on a vibe and then cheaped out on the $12 bottle that decides whether the $200 vibe feels good or like sandpaper.
The mistake that taught me this
I had a silicone toy I loved and a silicone lube I loved and no idea those two things destroy each other. A few uses in, the toy’s surface had gone tacky and slightly rough — permanently. That $40 lesson is the reason this guide exists and the reason I now read the back of the bottle.
Water-based: the default
Safe with every toy material, washes off easily, doesn’t degrade anything. The only downside is it dries out faster, so keep the bottle within reach. If you only ever buy one lube, this is it — and it’s what I should have bought the first time.

Sliquid H2O Original
Water-based, glycerin-free, paraben-free. Safe with every toy material. The default pick.
Silicone-based: lasts longer, can’t mix with silicone toys
It lasts dramatically longer and is excellent for shower use. The catch is the one I learned the hard way: it bonds with and degrades silicone toys. If your favorite toy is silicone — and most good modern ones are — keep this for hands, bodies, and non-silicone toys only.
Pjur Original Silicone
The benchmark silicone lube. Lasts forever, great for shower use. Don’t mix with silicone toys.
Hybrid: usually a marketing word
Hybrids promise the best of both. In practice a good water-based formula gets you where you’re going without the asterisks. I don’t think about hybrids anymore and you probably don’t need to either.
The whole guide compresses to: buy water-based, keep it nearby, and read the bottle before you pair it with a silicone toy. I needed to ruin one to internalize that. You don’t.
